Scent Awareness

To ensure the health and safety of all who study, work and visit here, Western requests your cooperation in maintaining a scent-free workplace.

Scents can cause irritation of the eyes, throat and nose for some individuals with allergies, asthma and other respiratory conditions.  They can also cause health effects such as dizziness, headaches, skin irritation, fatigue and other symptoms for some people.

In 2008, the University adopted a Scent Aware Guideline to encourage all those on campus at Western to eliminate the use of scented products whenever possible.

Examples of scented products include:

  • Personal hygiene products such as perfume, cologne, fragrances, after-shave, hairspray, lotion, soap, deodorant, shampoo, and cosmetics
  • Industrial and household chemicals and cleaners and other household products
  • Air fresheners

Switching to scent-free products may cause some minor inconveniences for some, but the payoff is a healthier workplace for all.  We appreciate your cooperation in keeping the air we share healthy and scent-free.
